An essential feature of the XBRLeXtensible Business Reporting Language standard is its extensible nature inherited from the XMLeXtensible Markup Language standard.

Two scenarios can arise:

1. The taxonomy must be created from scratch, without other constraints. In this case, we the XBRL specifications are leveraged to produce the new taxonomy.
2. An existing taxonomy must be extended in a given context such as ESEF by ESMA or the ones defined by the SEC. In this case, the specifications of the taxonomies are extended.
